Despite being the top team in the Western Hockey League, the Moose Jaw Warriors can still learn valuable lessons and that’s what happened on Saturday in Medicine Hat.

The Warriors didn’t play particularly well in either game on their two-game Alberta road trip over the weekend, ending things with a 5-3 loss to the Tigers, which snapped a four-game winning streak.

“Obviously we’ve got things that we need to work on and this week in practice, we’re going to have to get real serious about things,” said Warriors assistant coach Scott King after Saturday’s loss.

Undisciplined play sunk the Warriors on Saturday as Barrett Sheen was called for a five-minute major with a delayed penalty already coming. That put Moose Jaw down 5-on-3 and the Tigers scored twice to move in front 3-2 and the Warriors could never recover.

One of the best attributes this Warriors’ team has shown this season has been their ability to learn from bad games and move forward.  Overage forward Tanner Jeannot said that’s what they need to do again.

“We need to take away what you can learn and use it to get better,” he said. “We took too many penalties, so we’ve got to work on being more disciplined and be a bit smarter in our own end and make sure we get the pucks out.”

Coming out of the loss, the Warriors have a week of practice ahead at Mosaic Place and Jeannot said they need to be motivated throughout the week.

“We need to push ourselves even harder in practice, work that much harder because we know how hard we want to come out this next weekend to get those wins,” said Jeannot. “We’re going to use the loss to fuel our fire in practice, work hard all week and come out strong next weekend.”

The Warriors haven’t played at home since Jan. 14, but they will play five of their next six games on home ice. First up is the Red Deer Rebels, who Moose Jaw has a 3-0 record against this season.

Making sure that they come out of the gates hard and put up a fully 60-minute fight will be the focus for the Warriors.

“We have to realize that we’re a team that we’ve got a bullseye on our back, other teams are looking to have their best game against you, so it’s never going to be easy, no matter what building you go into or who comes into our building,” said King.

Jeannot added, “Red Deer is a hard working team, but we want to be the hardest working team out there, so that’s what we want to do, force them to play our game and we should be good.”

The Warriors will also host Prince George on Saturday.
