The Moose Jaw Midget AAA Warriors started their Macs midget tournament in Calgary with a win yesterday, 4-2 over the Calgary Royals.

The Warriors got a hat trick from Connor McGrath in the game, which was tied at 1-1 early before the Warriors really got going.

“We started out pretty slow, like I figured was going to happen after having seven days off with Christmas and then just comign up on Boxing Day and then playing same day,” said Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber. “But it was good, the guys played well and we ended up coming out with the win, so it was good.”

Kirk Mullen scored the Warriors’ other goal.

Their test tonight will be one of the top teams in the BC Midget AAA League, the Cariboo Cougars.

Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber said he wasn't able to see them play their first game of the tournament, which was a 7-2 win over Airdrie.

“Just from what I heard, they’re quite skilled and they’re quick, … and I heard their goaltending has been really good, too,” said Weisgerber. “It’ll be a tough game obviously. They’ve done well in this league and it should be a really good word.”

The Warriors and Cougars are on the ice in Calgary at 9 Friday. They have Saturday off before they face the Airdrie CFR Bisons Sunday morning at 10 and then the St. Albert Nektar Raiders, who have only one loss in regulation, Monday at 1:30.

The playoff round starts New Year’s Eve.
