A successful showing at training camp over the weekend has earned four prospects a chance to sign with the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Forwards Kale Clouston and Brecon Wood, along with defencemen Matthew Benson and Matthew Sanders all signed their WHL Standard Player Agreements with the Warriors on Sunday night.

“This is kind of two-fold, we’ve got our eye on certain players that we believe have gone through the weekend and are competing for spots on our team, and then we’re putting pieces in place with guys that will be with our group, be affiliate players, be a part of our program and play with us down the road,” said General Manager Alan Millar.

Clouston and Wood were both selected by the Warriors in the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft and are hoping to crack the team’s roster this year as 16-year-olds, as is Benson, who earned a WHL contract after coming into camp as an undrafted listed player.

Sanders was selected by the Warriors in the fifth round of the 2016 WHL Bantam Draft.

“Overall I thought I had a pretty good camp,” said Wood, who was a seventh round pick in 2015. “I got better as the week went on and the end product is all worth it.”

Wood scored for Team Black in the Warriors’ Black & White Intrasquad Game to end training camp. Over his two camps with the Warriors, the Edmonton product has shown a knack for putting the puck in the net.

He said that he came into this camp looking to impress enough to earn a spot on the team.

“Since the day I was drafted, I just want to be here and get in the lineup as soon as I can,” he said. “I had a hard working summer, and a hard working two years since getting drafted, so definitely proud of the way things turned out.”

Wood – six-foot-two, 168 lbs. -- had four goals and 15 points in 22 games last year with the OHA Edmonton team.

Clouston was originally a fifth round pick by the Warriors in 2015. He had 14 goals and 39 points in 37 games last season with Rockeyview in the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League.

“He’s a big, six-foot-four right winger with a great stride,” said Millar on Clouston. “He’s a hard working and character guy.”

Sanders – six-foot-two, 191 lbs. -- was solid throughout training camp for the Warriors and is the fourth player from this year’s draft class to sign with Moose Jaw. He had seven goals and 17 points with the Calgary Bantam AAA Bisons last season.

“Impressive young defenceman through prospect and training camp. He’s big, mobile and makes smart, simple plays,” said Millar.

Benson joins the Warriors’ organization after going undrafted in 2015. Last season, he had one goal, 13 points and 36 penalty minutes in 33 games with the Delta Hockey Academy 15s.

“He’s been one of the top prospects at camp, we’re excited for Matt and our club on his signing,” said Millar on Benson.

All four players will remain in camp with the Warriors over the course of the next week and take part in some preseason games, including Tuesday’s rookie game against the Swift Current Broncos.
