The Moose Jaw Warriors locked up a key piece of the team's future on Thursday.

Winnipeg product Eric Alarie signed his WHL Standard Player Agreement, committing to the Warriors after being selected by the team with the 22nd overall pick in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.

"We're very pleased that Eric and his family have committed to the Warriors and the WHL and we believe that he's going to be a very good player for us down the road," said Warriors GM Alan Millar on Thursday.

Alarie is coming off a stellar season with the Rink Hockey Academy's Bantam Prep team. He posted 28 goals and 55 points in 30 games in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League.

The 15-year-old carried that over to his first camp with the Warriors where he showed well during the team’s Development Camp at the start of June. Millar said they liked what they saw during that camp.

"He's a unique player, the power forward game is a bit of a specialty in the game today, especially when you can combine that with good skill," said Millar. "He's going to be a big horse, he's going to be hard to play against and he's got a very good shot right now for a 15-year-old.

"There's a real good package there in terms of size, strength and skill that our fans are going to really like down the road and he's going to be an important player for us."

Alarie will be in attendance for the Warriors' training camp later this month, which will his first with the organization.

Millar said it will be good for the young forward to have the opportunity to see how the older players prepare and what it takes to play in the WHL.

"Our belief all along has been that once players commit to us, we want them to spend as much time with our team as they can, it's important to be around our players and our coaching staff," said Millar.

"Training camp is an important step in that process, Eric will be around for at least a couple of weeks, he'll be around with our veteran group, he'll play some preseason games and it will be another step and experience in his development that he'll benefit from."

An interesting note is that with Alarie signing his WHL SPA, he cannot be traded by the Warriors during his 15 and 16-year-old seasons after a rule change by the WHL this offseason.

The Warriors open training camp on Aug. 22 at Mosaic Place.
