The Moose Jaw Midget AAA Warriors got some good results in the pre-season over the weekend against the Swift Current Legionnaires.

They won 6-0 here in Moose Jaw Saturday and then 3-2 in Swift Current Sunday.

Warriors head coach Trevor Weisgerber said the team had a good week of practice heading into the game.

“A lot of it was just taking away time and space,” said Weisgerber after the first game. “We talk about it int he first week here that we want to be a tough team to play against. We want to be physical and make sure we’re taking away time and space all over the ice.”

Saturday’s battle saw an even first period, and then the Warriors rolled away with the game with a flurry of goals late in the second after some domination in the period. After an early goal from Ethan Peters, Lucius Schmidt, shorthanded, Evan Callaghan and Connor McGrath scored in an 85 second span to make the game 4-0.

Austin Reschny and Atley Calvert scored in the third., while Dylan Ernst recorded 21 saves in the shutout. The Warriors fired 50 shots at Swift Current’s netminding.

The Warriors had to come from behind in Sunday’s tilt. McGrath scored late in the second to make the game 2-2, and then Kirk Mullen scored early in the third to break the tie. Calvert scored the Warriors’ other goal.

Chase Coward stopped 29 of 31 Swift Current shots to earn the win.

While it's only pre-season, with a young team this year it's important to play well this early.

“It’s nice for the boys just to get some competition with them instead of beating each other up the whole time,” Weisgerber said. “And now we get to play some other teams and it’s good.

One could even say the Warriors shot out the lights in the Saturday game. With a couple of minutes left in the game and players milling about after a stoppage, power went out at Mosaic Place and much of the city. With only emergency lights on, the game was called at that point.

The Warriors will have a pair of games on the road this weekend when they travel to Notre Dame to play the Hounds Saturday and then Regina against the Pat Canadians Sunday.
