16-year-old goalie Adam Evanoff made 27 saves to lead the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 2-1 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Tuesday night at Mosaic Place to open the 2016 exhibition schedule.

Luka Burzan and Ryan Bowen provided the offence for the Warriors in the win, both scoring in the second period.

In the first period, both teams had their opportunities to score the first goal of the WHL pre-season, but neither side was able to slide a puck past Evanoff and Swift Current goalie Bailey Brkin.

Moose Jaw was aggressive in the offensive zone and created multiple turnovers which resulted in extra attack time, but they weren’t able to convert and went in to the first intermission scoreless.

Just 1:34 into the second period, the Warriors created a turnover in the neutral zone, Burzan pounced on the puck and then stormed towards the Bronco net on the right wing and finished the rush with a shot along the ice that beat Brkin to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

At 4:20, the Warriors pressed deep inside the Bronco zone and then on a goal mouth scramble, Bowen tipped the puck in to make it 2-0.

The teams exchanged opportunities throughout the third, but the Warriors held onto their two-goal lead.

Swift Current outshot the Warriors 13-6 in the final frame and with their net empty in the final minute of the third period, Colby Sissons was able to snap a shot to the back of the net to make it a one-goal game.

Moose Jaw held off a late Bronco charge in the final moments with some big saves from Evanoff.

The Warriors’ pre-season schedule continues on Thursday afternoon with a battle against the Saskatoon Blades at 3 p.m. in Regina at the Cooperators Centre.  They wrap up their weekly schedule on Saturday afternoon with another trip in to Regina for an afternoon game against Swift Current at 3 p.m.
