Second period penalty trouble sunk the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night at the Canalta Centre in Medicine Hat.

The Tigers scored two power play goals late in the second and went on hand the Warriors a 5-3 loss, snapping Moose Jaw’s four-game winning streak.

In the first period, the Warriors tilted the ice into the Tigers zone as Moose Jaw was quick in transition, which resulted in shots off the rush, they won battles along the offensive zone boards, and were able to push the puck to net.

Moose Jaw outshot the Tigers, 15-5, in the opening period.

They picked up the game’s first goal at 18:41, when Tanner Jeannot led a rush up the ice and took a shot inside the left circle that went off a Tiger and rolled to a trailing Kale Clague, the Warriors defenceman made a quick pass to Brayden Burke on the right side of the Tigers net where he pushed in his 24th goal of the season.

Medicine Hat tied the game at one only 3:55 into the second period, when Ryan Chyzowski deflected a shot from the blue-line, but Moose Jaw went back out in front under a minute later, at 4:29, when Jeannot scored his 33rd of the season.

Late in the second, the Warriors found themselves down two players when they took two penalties on the same play, the most significant being a five-minute major to forward Barrett Sheen for a hit to the head, which he also received a game misconduct.

Medicine Hat made the Warriors pay, David Quenneville scored on the 5-on-3 at 13:07 to tie the game at two and then at 16:25, James Hamblin banged a loose puck in from the left side the Moose Jaw crease to give the Tigers a 3-2 lead.

Two minutes into the third period, the Tigers put Moose Jaw on their heels when Mark Rassell scored to add to Medicine Hat’s lead.

The Warriors pulled to within one at 12:11, when Ryan Peckford scored his 18th of the year and they had chances for an equalizer late in the game with their net empty, but they weren’t able to convert, instead the Tigers added an empty net goal to finish the game.

Jeannot led the Warriors with a goal and two points, Clague picked up two assists.

Moose Jaw didn’t have a power play, while Medicine Hat was 2-for-6.

The Warriors are now off for the rest of the month as they open their February schedule coming up on Friday at home against Red Deer and then host Prince George on Saturday.  Tickets are available online at mjwarriors.ca or at the Mosaic Place Box Office.
