The Moose Jaw Warriors scored three goals in the second and added two more in the third on their way to a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Oil Kings on Friday at Rogers Place.

The win improves the Warriors’ record on their current seven-game road trip to 5-0-1.

Goalie Adam Evanoff turned away 27 shots to push his personal win streak to four games, while Tristin Langan and Justin Almeida picked up a goal and two points each.

It was Edmonton that struck first in the game, as five minutes into the opening period, the Oil Kings fought the puck away from the Warriors on the Moose Jaw end boards and set up Josh Williams between the circles where he put a wrist shot past Evanoff.

Late in the frame and working on the power play, the Warriors had thought they tied the game at one but the goal was called off due to a high stick.

Moose Jaw picked up an early penalty in the second period but their penalty kill supplied a spark that they were missing in the first period. They battled hard and created opportunities as they kept Edmonton pinned.

Getting to the eight-minute mark of the period, Langan intercepted an Edmonton pass in the neutral zone and drove hard down the Edmonton right wall. As he cut to the net, he got a shot away and then picked up his rebound to score his team-leading 38th goal.

Then on the penalty kill with just under seven minutes left in the period, Jett Woo broke up a rush an Edmonton rush at the Moose Jaw blue-line and swung the puck ahead to Almeida, who scored his 16th of the season on the shorthanded breakaway.

Moose Jaw went up by two at 18:06 when they set up Brayden Tracey for a power play goal, but unfortunately the Oil Kings came back with a Conner McDonald goal only 12 seconds later to make it a one-goal game again.

The Warriors got some breathing room at 9:19 of the third period when rookie defenceman Alek Sukunda used the glass to clear the puck out of the Moose Jaw zone. With the puck moving towards the Edmonton zone, Luke Ormsby hustled up ice to get control of the puck, drove around the Oil Kings defenceman as he cut to the net and finished the rush by sliding the puck between the legs of Dylan Myskiw for his sixth of the season.

Edmonton tried to push back on a late power play and pulled their goalie for an extra attacker, however, Daniil Stepanov stopped their charge with a shorthanded empty-net goal.

Moose Jaw was 1-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 with two shorthanded goals on the penalty kill.
