The final is set in the Moose Jaw High School Boys Soccer League after the Weyburn Eagles advanced with a 2-0 win over the Vanier Vikings on Monday.

The Eagles scored in each half to propel themselves into the league final in their first year in the league.

“This was a very well played game by both sides and Vanier really took it to us in the first half,” said Weyburn head coach John Megenbir.

Weyburn was able to withstand the attack from the Vikings in the first half and a goal from Kaj MacMurchy put them in front. That ended up being the difference as Brayden Roberts added a marker midway through the second half that sealed the win.

“We just hung on the ball a little bit better, we won the free balls and that was the difference today,” said Megenbir. “It was hard for us to break down their back line, so our goals were more from outside, sending in.”

Despite failing to score and seeing their title hopes fall, the Vikings are coming away encouraged with how they were able to play.

“There was a lot of things that we saw happening today that we really haven't seen throughout the season,” said Vanier head coach Jaysen Tomashewski. “There's a lot of stuff that we saw today that are going to help when we get to regionals next week.”

Tomashewski said he's really seen progress in the way that they're able to possess the ball and that's something they want to build on going into regionals.

“We've been playing bang-ball for too long, today we finally slowed it down, we finally passed the ball, we moved through the neutral third, we got into the attacking third and then there's opportunities,” said Tomashewski.

Weyburn will now face defending league champions, the Central Cyclones in the final.

“We're going to have to pick it up a notch against Central,” said Megenbir. “They're finding the net now, they're scoring on their shots, so we've got to watch that.”

The final goes on Wednesday at 4:00pm at the Canada Games Soccer Field.
