The Western Hockey League has been granted approval for their return to play in Alberta.

The five WHL teams based in Alberta (Red Deer, Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Edmonton and Calgary) will begin a 24-game regular season within the province of Alberta, starting February 26th, but without fans. Teams will begin self-quarantine Saturday, report to clubs Feb. 6, undergo testing upon arrival, and then begin on-ice training Feb. 12 at the earliest.

"WHL Clubs are also committed to providing private PCR testing through DynaLIFE Medical Labs, to ensure no additional strain is placed on public health," a media release from the WHL said. "Players will be tested upon arrival to their WHL Club and once again before engaging in any team activity. DynaLIFE’s PCR testing is considered a gold standard for COVID-19 testing, and was utilized in Edmonton during the NHL’s Stanley Cup Playoffs and the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship."

Teams will play one opponent per week with a five-day break between new opponents.

If there is are one or more positive Covid-19 tests among the players or staff on teams, protocols will have those teams take a 14-day break from all activities. Players and coaches will wear masks at all times with the exception of practices and games.

"The WHL continues to work with government and health authorities in each provincial and state jurisdiction to establish a start date for the WHL’s East Division, B.C. Division and U.S. Division," the release said. "Approval from the health authorities is required in each jurisdiction for the balance of the WHL Divisions to return to play."
