The 15 Wing Moose Jaw Matadors Fencing Club opens their 2012-13 season on Tuesday night (5-6:30pm) out at the base and are always looking for new members to come out.  With a new season on the horizon, there's no better time to start.

"We do ask people to give it a week and see if it's what they expected," explains Jennifer Shrubsole with the Matadors.  She adds that the club offers a free one-week trial run for people interested.

Shrubsole says you don't have to worry about purchasing all the equipment either, "Because it's not something you can just go to the regular sports store and get, instead we do have equipment for people to use."

So what kind of benefits can you get from taking part in fencing?  Shrubsole says it's a great work out, "People are often surprised because when you see fencing they have their mask and equipment on, so you can't really see the exertion that's put into it.  It certainly is a good work out, you get some good flexibility and believe it or not, you do get a bit of a cardio workout.

"You also learn paitence because those people that rush in usually get hit, so you have to learn paitence and to control your emotions.  It's a very well round sport that way."

There are three different weapons used in fencing at the Matadors club, foil, epee, and sabre, all of which are Olympic sports.

Shrubsole says they do see a peak in interest in the sport during an Olympic year, "I remember seeing it myself in the Olympics and never knew about it until after that.  It's a great opportunity to come experience fencing, even if you're not planning on going to the Olympics, at least to try something new."
