PRINCE ALBERT -- Brody Willms was locked in right from the opening puck drop on Wednesday night in Prince Albert and he led the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-1 series lead over the Prince Albert Raiders.

The Warriors' 19-year-old goaltender made 32 saves for his first career playoff shutout as the Warriors skated to a 2-0 win over the Prince Albert Raiders in game four of their first round playoffs series at the Art Hauser Centre.

“It feels really good, to come in here and take two is huge and take that 3-1 series lead back home is nice,” said Willms.

“I'm playing my best when I'm playing on my toes and confident in my feet and I did that tonight. I was able to carry that over from (game three) and it went well.”

The series didn't start how Willms wanted as he was pulled from his first career WHL start, but the Warriors goalie has turned his game around over the past three contests and has been a huge part of Moose Jaw’s three-game winning streak.

“He was calm and made some saves at the right times,” said Head Coach Tim Hunter. “They didn't have a ton of scoring chances, but he was there when we needed him. I thought our penalty killing did an extremely good job as well and he's always your best penalty killer.”

The shutout didn't come without some controversy late in the game as Raiders forward Cole Fonstad fired the puck past Willms, but the goal was called off due to incidental contact made by Raiders defenceman Max Martin before the shot.

Willms said the contact effected his ability to the make the save, “Their guy came in and we got kind of tangled up and I couldn't push across.”

The Warriors had built up a 1-0 lead on a late second period goal from Justin Almeida and they held that lead throughout the third period before Brayden Burke iced the game with an empty net goal in the final minute.

Burke finished with a goal and two points in the win, while Josh Brook had two assists.

After a back-and-forth game three that saw the Warriors storm back from a two-goal deficit late to win in overtime, game four was a much tighter contest right from the start. The Raiders were able to put good pressure on the Warriors throughout, but Moose Jaw's defensive game went to another level to keep Prince Albert away from the front of the net.

“In the playoffs, you've got to lock down and you’re going to win those one-goal, two-goal games like we did today,” said Almeida. “After that first goal, we knew that we had to be aware defensively and just keep pushing the pace offensively as well.”

Hunter said the Warriors adapted to the game that they were going to need to win the game, “Every game is different, different guys step up and tonight our goalie stepped up and played an extremely good game,” he said.

“We defended well, we moved pucks, we were a little slow getting going, but once we got the urgency and quickness in our game, it started to come around and I felt we played well right until the end.”

Game four opened with a back-and-forth first period that ended with no score. Willms had a strong opening 20 minutes, turning away nine shots from the Raiders, while at the other end, the Warriors couldn’t generate much as far as quality chances to go into the first break scoreless.

The Raiders started the second period with some good jump and were able to put the pressure on the Warriors, but they withstood and as the period went on, they started to find their way to Prince Albert net.

Moose Jaw got their reward with 3:57 to go in the frame as Brook kept the puck in at the line and found Burke, who fed Almeida in the slot where he buried his second of the playoffs to make it 1-0 after one.

The Warriors killed off two power plays for the Raiders in the opening 10 minutes of the third period. Moose Jaw had the first power play of the game, followed by five straight man advantages to finish the game for Prince Albert.

Moose Jaw dug down after the disallowed goal and played some strong defence in front of Willms over the final three minutes. Burke sealed the win with an empty goal with 15 seconds remaining in regulation.

The Warriors were 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the win, while going 0-for-1 on the power play.

The Warriors and Raiders will meet for game five coming up on Saturday night at Mosaic Place. Tickets are on sale now at mjwarriors.ca and the Mosaic Place Box Office.
