Bowling is a great way to stay active, while not having to be overly athletic to take part.

Another season of YBC youth bowling has started up here in Moose Jaw at the South Hill Bowling Centre and they're looking for young kids to come out and try the sport, which has seen its numbers decline over the past few years.

“There's a lot of sports out there, there's a lot of stuff to occupy kids time and bowling is just one of those sports that a lot of people take it for granted that they can just do it for fun,” said coach Tom Montgomery. “There are leagues for it, there's a place for everybody. We have provincials, we have nationals, we have everything that other sports have, it just a little more low key.”

YBC bowling is open to kids from ages four to 18 and is easy to pick up.

“It's a great way for kids to learn a team sport, you just have to be able to throw a ball down the lane, there's great coaching involved and it's not super competitive,” said Montgomery. “It's just a great way for kids to get out, get a little physical activity and at the same time, meet some new people.”

There isn't much of a time commitment to take up bowling with only one league night a week, depending on the age level.

“Bantam, peewee and bowlasaurus divisions run at ten o'clock every Saturday morning, and we have people there to register if anybody wants to come out,” said Montgomery. “Our junior and senior teams are at seven o'clock on Sunday nights and it takes about two hours to get through your games.”

It's a cost effective sport as well with games running at $4/game for bowlasaurus and then a pro-rated amount for the other divisions with the highest price at $10.

“Any kid can bowl, any age group, any size, any shape, it's really open to anybody,” said Montgomery. “We encourage them to try hard, but you go at your level in bowling, it's about having fun.”
