For eleven years now, the "World's Largest Truck Convoy" has traveled Saskatchewan Highways to raise funds and awareness for Saskatchewan Special Olympic Athletes.

On Saturday September 9th, they'll be back again with over forty trucks passing Moose Jaw on their journey from Saskatoon and Swift Current to Regina, where the Special Olympics Saskatchewan headquarters resides.

All kinds of trucks are participating in the convoy, like semis, tow trucks, buses, garbage trucks, and many other large vehicles.

"The trucking industry has been hugely wonderful," said the Director of Marketing and Development for Special Olympics Saskatchewan, Chelsea Fidler. "They have huge hearts and have really banded together to raise money for the Special Olympics,"

The trucks will begin in Saskatoon and Swift Current, with about half of the participants at each, and leave for Regina at 8:30 am. The trucks will make stops in Chamberlain and Moose Jaw where other trucker will join them. Then they will continue on to Regina, where a celebration will be waiting for them at the Turvey Center, and their 6th annual truck pull will take place there too. The truck pull is where teams of 8 strap up and pull a fifteen tonne semi for fifteen meters.

Drivers can sign up last second before the convoy leaves, as long as they complete the proper tasks. Which includes donating $100 to Special Olympics Saskatchewan and doing pledges for their cause. The driver who raised the most money gets the honour of being the lead trucker for the convoy.

All the money raised will go towards the athletes participating and Special Olympics programs. That helps run provincial games, pay for daily sports programming (rentals, uniforms, equipment), hold professional development opportunities and provide coaching certification clinics.

Last year, 45 trucks joined the convoy and raised over $20,000.

"We are just very grateful for all of our sponsors and partners that have helped out," Fidler added. "Eleven years is a very long standing event and we're very excited about this year."
