The ongoing legacy from the 55 Plus Games that were held in Moose Jaw in 2018 will be seen from the grandchildren of those who participated.

The games committee made a nearly $9,000 donation to the City of Moose Jaw's parks and recreation department, who will use the money to buy outdoor fitness equipment Crescent Park beside the playground there.

Games chair Crystal Froese explained what the committee had in mind with the donation, which came to $8,819.96.

“Part of the provincial seniors' games is to leave behind something that will inspire seniors to be more active,” said Froese. “So the committee, when we were looking at ideas of what that money could go to, even before we had an understanding of what that final sum would be, we kind of looked at Crescent Park because there are a dozen seniors apartments that surround the park.”

The equipment will be installed next year. Scott Osmachenko with the city of Moose Jaw said they looked at several options for the outdoor equipment, and they will be buying about seven pieces of the equipment.

“Fitness is increasing and there is a lot of different fitness equipment,” Osmachenko said. “But when looking at this demographic, we thought there was actually some equipment called a city bike, which is kind of a stationary bike and you roll on it, but there’s also an arm bike, but for those who might be not strong in ability, they can just sit on a bench and simply pedal with their arms.”

They are looking for the spring and summer next year to get it implemented at Crescent Park.
