SUMA 2019 is underway.

Local officials along with leaders in the community of Assiniboia have made their way to Saskatoon for the annual Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association convention.

"That convention is always a very good convention to attend, the education sessions, in particular, there's a number of topics there we certainly want to attend," explained Mayor of Assiniboia, Bob Himbeault.

With the event only taking place for four days, Mayor Himbeault noted that organizers have squeezed an enormous amount of seminars and workshops into the short week.

"There's one on shutting out crime in the community, solid waste management so landfill concerns, a good one there called Girls in the Game: Women in Politics, and on Sunday it winds up with SaskPower has a presentation on what their plans are moving forward a vision of clean energy."

One item on the agenda that the team from south of the city were looking forward to was a seminar on the Humboldt Broncos bus crash tragedy that just saw court proceedings taking place last week in Melfort. Mayor Himbeault said they'll be discussing what happened, how as a community and a province officials felt it was handled and if there's another devastating situation in the future what could be done differently.

"They've even got a workshop on how the city of Humboldt handled their tragedy, and so there certainly may be some interesting topics for the (other) communities if something similar happened to them, there could be some pointers on what Humboldt did and what they would have handled differently."

Mayor Himbeault along a few town councillors and the Chief Administrating Officer are in attendance this week.
