Monday, January 17th, would have been Betty White's 100th birthday.

She was known for a variety of things but her love for animals really stuck out and touched the hearts of millions of people. So much so that the internet created 'The Betty White Challenge' in her memory.

The challenge encourages people to give a $5 donation to a local animal shelter or rescue.

The Moose Jaw Humane Society (MJHS) encouraged Moose Jaw residents to participate in the trend and the response was overwhelming.

"The Moose Jaw Humane Society just wants to take a moment to thank everybody in the community of Moose Jaw and surrounding area who made a donation to the Betty White Challenge day. Our shelter raised $10,000 in just 24 hours, which is amazing," says Dana Haukaas, the Executive Director for the MJHS, "And what a lovely tribute to a lady who valued animals as much as Betty White did."

She adds that the MJHS had no idea that the Betty White Challenge would turn out like this. She also said that donations are still trickling in so the number of donations might be higher by the end of the week.

The MJHS counted all the donations on Tuesday and by the end of the day, they were shy $113 from $10,000. One of the board members at the shelter heard about this and decided to donate the remaining $113 to even the total out at $10,000.

Haukaas says that the donations will be going towards the animals care and well being.

"Our biggest expense every month is our vet bill and that covers everything from spaying and neutering all of the adult animals to the emergent care for anybody who comes in injured or critically ill and it also covers any illnesses for the pets' welfare here during their stay with us."

One large food donation was also made by local residents, Rob and Denise Hanley. They spent $260 in P-C Optimum points at Superstore on different kinds of cat and dog food.

Denise Hanley says, "We thought it would be a good day (to do it) and maybe other people would see it and they'd do the same thing... it was a good way to spend those points."

She added that she and Rob are going to try to save up points throughout 2021 to make the same kind of donation next year for Betty White's 101st birthday.
