SGI and insurance agencies are sending out a warning about thieves using your own key fob against you.

"When you are leaving your car and when you're locking it with the key fob on your key chains, thieves sitting in the parking lot can now copy that so they clone your vehicles security and then what they do is after they see you go in, they just use their device, get in, clean out your car, and away they go," said Greg Marcyniuk, Agency Owner of Heritage Insurance.

Its not a hard concept to understand, but its a hard crime to detect yourself.

You can't stop a thief from taking the codes when you use your key fob, but, there is one way to combat this.

Marcyniuk suggests getting in the habit of locking your vehicle using the button in the side doors. This way, they not only can't get a hold of those codes, it also makes you a little more aware of your surroundings when you take the time to lock it instead of walking away and pressing a button.

Key fob theft isn't anything new, but it is something to stay aware of, especially in bigger city centres.
