The third Monday in January, better known as Blue Monday, is said to be one of the saddest and most depressing days of the year, but really, it's just one big scheme.

While there are many other factors that make January depressing, like the lack of light and getting off of the holiday high, Blue Monday is just a myth.

Donna Bowyer, with the Canadian Mental Health Association, explains how it all started:

"It just started in 2005 and was an advertising strategy by a company that was selling trips south for the holiday. They said that there was a calculation they did that proved the third Monday of January was the most depressing day of the year, but it was all just an advertising scheme."

"We've made our New Year's resolutions and by the third week a lot of us have already given up on it. We start to feel as if we are a failure, but really January is one of the lowest energy months of the year, so it isn't a good time to be making all these kinds of promises to ourselves about these resolutions."

If you are feeling a little blue though, Bowyer said that excising, improving your diet, and treating yourself well can really help with your mood.
