The Government of Saskatchewan has expanded eligibility for COVID-19 booster shots effective immediately.

Those aged 50 and older, all healthcare workers and individuals born in 2009 or earlier with underlying health conditions or clinically extremely vulnerable will be eligible for a booster shot.

The government has also increased the intervals to receive your booster shot from six months to five months.

“So, as people were nearing their five months, although small, we were seeing a definite signal of increase in breakthrough cases, mostly mild, but a few, unfortunately, resulting in hospitalizations at that five-month mark,” said Saskatchewan’s Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Saqib Shahab.

If you have already received your booster dose for travel purposes or because of underlining conditions, you do not need a fourth shot.

If you have received two doses of AstraZeneca it is recommended that a third mRNA booster dose is given five months following the second dose.

“Irrespective of which vaccine was used, any of the approved Health Canada vaccines, which were a two-dose schedule, they're all eligible for a booster at five months,” said Shahab.

Additional age groups will be added with a target of making boosters available for all Saskatchewan residents 18 years and older in early 2022.
