A rising population in Briercrest is having many positive effects on the community.

The census from Statistics Canada indicated the community, located 41 kilometres southeast of Moose Jaw on Highway 39, grew by 43% from 2011 to 2016, with 160 residents now calling the village home.

"There's so many activities going on and programs. You'll always be greeted with a smiling face and a wave on the highway," said Amber Vegso. "Every time I pass someone on the highway they're waving at me and I don't even know who they are. Everyone is supportive, it's awesome, it's a great community."

Vegso moved to Briercrest in the spring of 2016, after visiting often for 3 years prior to that.

She believes that with the larger number of people the amount of educational and entertaining programs has ballooned recently, with a great amount of local support.

"The fire department has 20 members, which wouldn't be possible without the increase in people we've seen. Which means they get to take part in more training and have better equipment to better serve the community."

With new activities being brought in and past ones expanding, Vegso noted it's because of attendance from residents and the people of Briercrest advertising for their town.

"I think there's been a huge increase of events and without the increase in population we wouldn't have all these great new ideas. The younger people leading and bringing new people in. We've had huge support from Moose Jaw and surrounding towns, people spread the word and get their family and friends to take part."

This past summer community groups and committees held Heritage Day out at Briercrest complete with a show and shine, dinner and dance and she said it was well attended.

She believes the youthful population benefits the community and noticed various people moving there to raise a family.

Vegso added their largest event where they anticipate the best attendance is around the corner, the Briercrest Red Eye curling tournament will take place in March.
