After 36 years (and 24 days) with the Fire Department, Bryan "Boh" VanTassel has made the move to retirement.

Retiring as the Platoon Captain, VanTassel or Boh is now taking a step back and taking it easy and going to just run his business, "Boh's Cycle and Sporting Goods."

"You kinda realize that, wow, that was a career," said Boh. "It's hard to believe you're that old. In the brain your don't feel like you're there but time is the proof."

When Boh started, firefighters were just that, they waited for the next fire to come. As time went on, more moves were made towards fire prevention and awareness and Boh describes it as making the Fire Department switch from fire fighting to people helping.

"The fire department changed. The guys became EMT's, now their EMR's. Were confined space, high angle, low angle, trench rescue."

As he leaves the department though, Boh has tons of faith in those still there.

"They eat, sleep and drink this. These guys love it. The training is way more than it ever was before you know," said Boh. "Yeah, the city of Moose Jaw's covered. That's what I said to these guys before I left. One of the last things I said to my crew was just remember, we're people helpers, now that's what you do."

Boh also remembered one thing he said to those at his fire department after a winter storm where they had led a convoy of cars to safety after responding to a crash.

"There's not many people on the planet that got to do what we just did, be proud of yourself. Cause being a firefighter is just that, you're a people helper, and we just lived a good one."
