When it comes to the 2019 Federal Budget, Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan Member of Parliament Tom Lukiwski is not a fan.

Finance Minister Bill Morneau delivered the budget in the House of Commons Tuesday, and Lukiwski’s immediate reaction was less than glowing, saying this should be considered Justin Trudeau’s cover-up budget.

“He’s trying to bury the SNC-Lavalin scandal under a $41 billion brand of new Liberal spending,” Lukiwski said. “This budget is nothing more than what I believe is a desperate election year promise from a Liberal government that’s mired in scandal and corruption. Nothing in the budget can be taken seriously because we can’t believe any of the promises that he’s made on any new spending initiative.”

There will be billions spent in new initiatives, from pharmacare to helping workers learn new skills. On the pharmacare file, the Liberals will create a new national drug agency in an attempt to lower costs of medication. The federal government believes they will be able to better negotiate some better drug prices and the cost of medication by up to $3 billion in the long run.

In the budget, Another $200 million in borrowing will come in a year that was supposed to see the Liberals deliver a modest surplus.

Lukiwski said we'll end up paying for these promises if the Trudeau government is re-elected and said financial experts state we are so far in debt as a country, we won't see a balanced budget, even with no new spending, until 2045.

“We all recall back in 2015... when Mr. Trudeau said prior to the election said that his government if elected would only run modest $10 billion deficits and would have a balanced budget by the year 2019. We now know that’s absolutely not true (and) it was never a consideration,” Lukiwski said.

The attempt from this budget is to buy votes and deflect from SNC-Lavalin, he said.

“Liberals have been promising a pharmacare plan for decades and have done absolutely nothing about it,” Lukiwski said. “There’s no reason to believe they will come through with a pharmcare program this budget.”

There is a $4 billion bailout for dairy and poultry farmers for those impacted by the new free trade deal.

There is money for seniors, Lukiwski said, but it took three years to appoint a minister responsible for seniors.

“Seniors have never been a priority for Justin Trudeau and this government,” LukiwskI said. “So whether it be housing, skills training, or anything else, we just can’t believe the legitimacy of this budget. He’s using Canadians’ and taxpayers money to deflect attention from this SNC-Lavalin scandal.”

The current budget has a $19.8 billion deficit planned for the 2019-20 fiscal year.
