With the city's fireworks display scheduled for Wednesday evening at 10:15, Moose Jaw's residents are getting excited to celebrate Canada's birthday in style. However, the excitement might become a little over-stimulating for the four-legged members of our families. The bright colours and sounds of fireworks can make pets anxious and stressed.

Some tips to keep your pets happy and healthy include keeping them inside and giving them a safe place to curl up out of sight of the show.

Dr. Melissa Smith from Bellamy Harrison Animal Hospital said licking their noses and playing with chew toys can have a calming effect on your pets.

“The other things I like to do with my dogs is to make sure we have some food puzzles or frozen Kongs ready for that event, something that will take a while for them chew on that safe to them,” she said.

Other tips include using ambient noise to mask the loud cracks, update their IDs and microchips (just in case), or if you are planning to go out for the fireworks, keep your pets at home.

Smith said in worse case scenarios, there are alternatives.

“There are a lot of over-the-counter products that we can use if they are anxious during them and also some prescription that can help if they are very, very scared,” she said.

All of these things will ensure your pet can be as happy as you are to see this evening's festivities.
