The Caronport Volunteer Fire Department is in the running for a $24,000 cash prize from My Mutual Insurance.

The company is rewarding local first responders for the hard work they put into keeping their communities safe.

Amy Long is the Deputy Fire Chief of the detachment.

"We are a very busy volunteer fire department. I think we do an average of 70 to 80 calls a year. A few years ago we were actually up over 90 calls. I would say that about a third of our calls are medical call, a third are fire, and a third are highway accidents along the #1."

Long says that the job is a pretty big one.

"We do cover quite a large area. We do the RM of Caron and the RM of Wheatland so from the Boharm grid right where JGL is there on the highway, all the way to past Parkbeg."

Voting for the winner starts Thursday, Sept. 17 at 9 am right here.
