Hunting, trapping and fishing helped to open western Canada when the first communities were established, Saskatchewan is celebrating Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Heritage Day.

The fur trade was a major factor in the establishment of the west with hunting and fishing helping to feed new explorers and residents.

"The recognition by the provincial government... is about seven years old and we also have the federal day on September 15th," explained Executive Director of the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation Darrell Crabbe. "We moved ours to November 15th because, historically, that was the opening for Whitetail deer."

Everyone is encouraged to wear camouflage clothing to celebrate the occasion with Mayor Fraser Tolmie even taking part, challenging other Saskatchewan mayors to dawn the camo in celebration as well.
