Mosaic Place was the site of an unforgettable moment for 47 new Canadians.

The citizenship candidates took the oath of citizenship Tuesday in front of family and friends.

Amanda Tetarenko, originally from Manchester in the United Kingdom, was one of those people becoming a Canadian citizen after nearly two decades of living here.

“I’ve been here 19 years (and) I was kind of holding off on doing it for a long time just because I was really nervous about the test,” she said. “Turns out it was quite easy. Now I feel I truly belong. This has been my home for 19 years and my family is all Canadian. Now I feel I truly belong.”

Tetarenko first moved to Canada with her parents 19 years ago with the idea that she may have been able to move back to England if she didn’t like it.

She hasn’t been back to England since, working up to becoming an official citizen.

“I’ve got great knowledge of Canada after 19 years of being here, so that’s helped,” she said. “It did help with doing the test. Otherwise, I’ve just been living my life as if I was a Canadian citizen so it’s not really a huge change for me. It just is more of a formality to be officially Canadian but I just consider Canada to be my home anyway.”

The citizenship candidates came from nine different countries. Tetarenko enjoys living in Moose Jaw, working at the Moose Jaw Humane Society, and has been living here for the last year and a half after living in Calgary.
