Monday night, city council decided they will go with Spectra Venue Management for the third party management of Mosaic Place.

In recent years, two different boards have been dissolved by the city to run the facility, which was opened in 2011.

After the city took over the facility last year, they looked at a third party management system of running the place.

“Spectra Venue Management has a long history of managing in excess of 80 facilities in North America, including six in Western Canada,” Moose Jaw City manager Jim Puffalt.

“I had some discussion with the city manager in Penticton who believes that Spectra will do an excellent job with our facility.”

Existing staff members will be retained through the changeover, which could begin as early as September.

Coun. Dawn Luhning said she didn't know where else to go from here, other than with third party management.

“I think we’re at the point now where maybe we have to look at third party management,” said Luhning. “I think it’s a five year contract. If it doesn’t work, then the council of the day can look at their options in five years. And we will, We’ll look into our options and we’ll look at that.”

Coun. Heather Eby said that the staff at Mosaic Place has done well through the changes.

“For anyone who’s paid attention to council, they’ll know that third party management has never made me jump up and down with excitement (and) it’s never been my first choice,” she said. “But I really do believe that right now, third party management is the best option we have for Mosaic Place.

Council voted 5-2 in favour of Spectra, which was the only company to come back with a response to the city's request for proposal in May.

Existing contracts Spectra will soon manage on behalf of the city include $100,000 annually from Mosaic for the naming rights until 2021 – negotiations which will begin again in August, $18,000 annually from Moose Jaw Ford for the naming rights to the curling facility, and the Moose Jaw Warriors, who have two one-year renewals until Aug. 2021.
