The City of Moose Jaw is now accepting applications for community grants and special events hosting for 2020-2021.

The Saskatchewan Lotteries Community Grant Program assists in the development of sport, culture and recreation programs by providing funds to non-profit community organizations that are operated by volunteers.

Scott Osmachenko, recreation services manager for the City of Moose Jaw said that a major benefit of this funding is that it removes the financial barrier in many different types of sport and recreation programs throughout the city.

"The free programs that we've been running at the Kinsmen, like the free swims, the free skates, free party and activity club. This program is also vital to keep the playground program free."

The goal of the program is to encourage community involvement in these areas, especially activities which encourage the participation of underrepresented populations in the community, such as at-risk youth and disabled persons.

"The positive basic is participation in sport, culture, recreation. we know that cost is a barrier. We know that those other underrepresented populations have other barriers that everyone might not have."

Portions of the funding will also be allocated for senior-specific programs as well as special events. Osmanchenko said that the Sask Lotteries has helped with the Saskatchewan Festival of Words, the Moose Jaw Band Festival, and more.

"About ten percent of ofour funding goes to seniors groups. The Lottery program sponsors groups so they can bring in more events to Moose Jaw."
