The composting program is back for another year in the community of Assiniboia.

Crews have begun going around the city to collect the compost bags.

Assiniboia Mayor Bob Himbeault talks about what they are looking for this time of year.

"We are primaraly after leaves and grass and of course your garden waste and that kind of stuff; we start in the first part of May and go until November 15th."

With landfills getting closer to maximum capacity every year, Himbeault says it's important to use these kinds of programs.

"It saves room in our landfill. They are all bagged and if they were collected in the regular garbage they would just be going into the landfill; it takes along time to get good compost, so we are starting to get a good pile out there which we will have people coming out there to pick up."

Himbeault also notes that the schedule will be seeing some changes following the upcoming weekend.

"Starting next week we are going to rotate - it's a Thursday right after their blue recycling bin pick up ,so Wednesday they put their recycling bins out and Thursday they put their compost bags out."

Residents are also reminded that the compost bags need to be clear or they will not be collected.
