The Cultural Centre Board is striking back at RuBarb Productions after the local theatre group was evicted from the City-owned building.

Last week, RuBarb held a press conference saying they were never told why they were evicted, and they asked the public to contact councillors and the mayor to voice their displeasure - also asking for donations to help cover moving expenses.

City Councillor and member of the Cultural Centre Board Dawn Luhning, however, said the Board was within their rights to serve the eviction notice.

"When they first moved in there were certain things they did to the building without approval from us, without approval from the Board and without approval from the City."

"I'm disappointed that RuBarb feels they need to take the tactics that they do and play the kind of games that they are with the Cultural Centre Board. We've tried to communicate with them and that just never happens. We want the facility to thrive and our concern right now is the space that RuBarb is taking up in the building. It's a significant amount of space which is hindering our ability and hindering our relationships with other groups in the city."

Councillor Luhning said their decision regarding RuBarb was warranted, and said that she stands behind it.

"We've got a very good board in place; people who have business-minded sense, understand the legalities surrounding decisions that you make when there might be agreements in place and when there's contracts in place. You can be assured that we checked all of our angles and know and understand what we're doing and we believe this is the best decision for the Cultural Centre."

The local theatre company has 3 productions coming up this summer and says they still plan on holding each at the Cultural Centre.
