The cost can seem a little out of reach for an item that you might never use, but when you do need it, it can make all the difference. The Moose Jaw Fire Department is reminding us that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors are important pieces of your home safety plan.

It might not seem that obvious but Public Education Officer Cathie Bassett explains the units can make a difference during a heat wave.

"At this time of year or when you have a heat wave going, you have a lot of electrical draw on your home so it is a factor," said Bassett.

That draw on the system could put stress on wiring and devices, potentially leading to smouldering or a fire. Basset said you should be testing all detectors in your home once a month, as well as replacing them completely ten years after the manufacturing date.
