Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw welcomed Kathy Brown and her son, Carter, to their new home during a key ceremony yesterday. The home is the seventh new-build for Habitat Moose Jaw.
Kathy said, "It's a cliche, but it really is a dream come true. It's one of those things that you don't think that you could dream for, but here we are...making that dream come true." 
Carter said having a new home is "...really cool. And I like that it's bigger, and we can put more stuff in it."
Fern Paulhus is the Construction Manager for Habitat for Humanity Moose Jaw. "A lot of people can't quite afford [a home] or they don't qualify with the banks. What [Habitat] does is...it gets them into a home with that interest-free [mortgage]...they have to put some time in. It's a big life-change for them. They have to learn how to do actual building of their home, and [then] maintain it."
Bill Harris, the Chair for Habitat Moose Jaw, said, "It's very important to have Habitat in all communities across the country. Every community [has someone] who has given up the possibility of owning their own home. They're in a cycle of poverty almost, where they continue to pay rent and don't see themselves ever having the enjoyment that home ownership will afford."
The Government of Canada, the Government of Saskatchewan and Habitat for Humanity partnered to help Kathy and Carter realize their dream of homeownership. Construction of the home received $50,000 in funding through both the federal and provincial governments. A donation from The Mosaic Company, in-kind and cash donations from local businesses and individuals in the community, fundraising projects, and many volunteer hours made the build possible.
MLA for Moose Jaw North Warren Michelson, Mayor Fraser Tolmie, family members, volunteers, and supporters were also on site during the key ceremony.
Kathy and Carter are expected to move into their new home at the end of November.
