There's good and bad news in the latest provincial crop report with dry conditions being the centre of attention.

45% of the crop is now in the bin, well ahead of the five year average of 28% with southwest Saskatchewan reporting 70% complete and the southeast at 60% done. The bad news is that the lack of rain this year has left the land parched according to Brent Flaten with the Ag Knowledge Centre.

"A lot of people are waiting off on the winter wheat and concentrating on harvesting or they are going to be seeding into the dry ground and hoping for rain later on. Our top soil continues to be dry for the large portion of the grain belt."

Depending on the producer, Flaten says some might just skip a winter crop this year due to the lack of moisture.
