Students at Peacock were able to learn more about vaping in an interactive maze that was at the school Monday.

Health Canada presented their 'Consider the Consequences' tour at the school.

Peacock vice principal Tana Arnott said that students in all grades have tried vaping.

“Vaping is on the rise, and we really wanted to educate our students to make sure that they have all the information they can in order to make good decisions,” said Arnott.

Ambassadors led the students on the tour through the maze as the students learned about vaping.

“Our staff is pumped to have something here to educate the kids and so far the feedback has been very positive,” Arnott said.

She said kids enjoyed the interactivity of the maze and that they were able to work in small groups.

Health Canada said that 23 per cent of students in Grades 7-12 have tried electronic cigarettes. “We see everyone from Grade 9 girls to Grade 12 boys, everyone in between, using and thinking that it’s better than smoking,” Arnott said. “So they also think they can use it in the building and on our grounds, and we want to make sure that they’re educated to know that it is not allowed and that there are consequences to doing such a thing.”

Arnott said the division is pairing with health authorities to share information with kids that age.

“It is so new, and it’s on the rise,” she said. “It’s so new that we don’t have the information we need and we have kids that aren’t making educated decisions.”
