A group of high school students from Herbert School made a memorable trip to the Canadian Light Source last week.

The ten students from grades 10-12 had the privilege to conduct science experiments on soil samples using the brightest light in Canada.

"It was a really cool experience," said Maddy Weinbender a grade 11 student at Herbert School. "It was definitely a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, very hands on and very interesting."

The experience was made possible as part of a unique enrichment education program, a new initiative that started this year allowing up to 20 classes from across the Canada to visit one of the countries largest science projects in history.

Before arriving at the facility the group of students collected soil samples from two gardens, one in Herbert and one from a farm. They also collected samples from Herbert's reservoir for the experiment.

"I expected it to be like most field trips where you go listen and you watch," she said. "This field trip we took our own samples and we got to do everything from start to finish. We prepared our samples, placed them in the machine and then got to watch our results appear."

Upon completion of the experiment, the students were able to see what elements were present in their soil samples. The last step in the process for the Herbert students is to prepare a report based on their findings from the experiment.
