A much needed bridge overhaul began this week, as a road closure took affect on the Briercrest Highway #339, between the junction at highway 39 and the Village of Briercrest.

Detour signs have been put in place, and a map will be made available on Briercrest's website, as well as posted at the community rink.

The Mayor of Briercrest, Bill Duncan said the work was a long time coming, "We've been having troubles with it over the last, probably 7-10 years with the banks eroding away from the guard rail, and they are going to be doing a fairly major overhaul because I know we were down to maximum 15 tons on the bridge."

He added, "So there had to have been something structurally that's in need of some attention, as well."

Duncan said he figures it is a pretty major rebuild, but had not received all of the details yet.

The bridge in question will be out of commission until the end of March, so motorists that travel south to Briercrest, Avonlea, Claybank or other areas, will need to plan an alternative route.

I know we have lots of rink activity these days, and just wanted to take and make sure people were, you know if they're coming through that direction to take the appropriate detours, or take and have a look and map their routes out before they leave
