After one of the worst environmental disasters in the province that involved a pipeline, Husky Energy has been granted approval to reopen their line in northern Saskatchewan.

It was last summer when the pipeline split sending 225,000 litres of blended crude into and around the North Saskatchewan river, contaminating water to a number of communities in the area and polluting wildlife habitats.

Upgrades to the pipe have been done as part of the re-opening, including a thicker walled pipe as well as ground movement monitors.

It's reported that ground shifting was to blame for the spill.
