It seems that with the growing concern over policy changes in the US, illegal border crossings are on the rise.

In the wake of plans for new restrictions on refugees in the United States, groups are making their way north.

RCMP report that there is an increasing rate of those seeking asylum here, predominantly from African countries like Somalia and Ghana.

Although they aren't able to give specific numbers for across Canada, a group of 21 crossed over near Emerson, Manitoba just this weekend bringing the total to 40 crossings in just 2 weeks.

The recent group was taken to the Canada Border Services Agency port at Emerson to make a refugee claim.

The first such story made headlines in December, when 2 men from Ghana arrived in Emerson back in December and had to be treated for severe frostbite, after they travelled by foot during freezing temperatures to get to Emerson.
