Snow and winter weather make life tough for everyone, even your pets.

With the recent freezing rain and slippery conditions, many people brought out the ice melt and the salt, but that can have a huge impact on your dog's health.

Local animal expert and pet trainer Gary Overs explains:

"With all this ice and stuff, make sure if you're a dog owner you're using pet friendly ice melt. When your dog comes in, it sticks to their feet, and if they start licking their feet you could end up with a very sick dog."

"When you see a dog stop and start picking up its feet, it's time to head home. When it's this cold I don't even recommend you take them out for walks unless they're conditioned to it."

You can help your dog by putting boots on their feet.

"I've been selling dog boots and coats like it's going out of style, and there's even products called Paw Wax that looks like a deodorant stick that you can rub on your dog's feet."

He added that even though your dog's paws may have fur, they sweat from the pads on their feet; therefore, they can become cold very quickly.
