The goal is to make our roads the safest in the world.

May 16th-22nd is Canada Road Safety week, where law enforcement across the country try to spotlight different hazards and distractions that can cause accidents.

Sargent Tim Schwartz with the RCMP says that while this week is important, it's not enough to just focus on safety one week of the year.

"Canada Road Safety Week should be 52 weeks out of the year. Every day you are driving. It's important to be focused on the task at hand. And to also be defensively driving, insuring that you will be alerted to any potential hazards."

Distracted driving and impared driving were to two main focuses of the week. Schwartz said that distracted driving is more than just being on your cell phone.

"Eating while your driving, maybe having a pet on your lap while driving. In cases of grooming, we've had people applying make-up or even shaving while driving. Driving is a very specifict task that you need to be aware of your surroundings at all times. It definately encompasses more than just a cell phone."

On May 20th, the focus will be squarely on impaired driving. It's National Enforcement Day for impaired driving, which Schwartz explained.

"We're certianly going to set up some traffic stops randomly in certian areas...just to insure that people havent been driving under the influence of alcohole or drugs. Also, that includes checking that people have their driver's licenses and registration. Maybe doing some bar walks just to remind people to plan a safe ride home."

Canada Road Safety week is an enforcement-driven initiative designed to increase public compliance and awareness with safe driving measures and ultimately, to save lives.
