Riverside Mission won't only be giving homeless people a meal next week, but some will even receive a haircut, as a new local barber will be taking over the mission on Monday to do some free hair trimming.

Jay Gauthier made his way to Moose Jaw at the end of July and started his own Barbershop. A seasoned person like Gauthier not only has a few years of training, but he also uses his skill to give free haircuts to homeless people.

Gauthier has his own little charity called Street Cuts Barber and decided to continue the work that he did in centers like Vancouver and Okotoks, and he found a way to do it here at the Riverside Mission in Moose Jaw.

"Jay just came into the office and he introduced himself to me and he explained what he wanted to do and he just has this heart for the homeless and I was just amazed by the idea that he had and I was like 'you know, I think this is a really good idea," Riverside Mission Interim Director Jacob Odie explained.

On Monday from 12 to 3, Gauthier will be taking over the Mission to give haircuts to around 10 people who need, and Odie believes that a good haircut can make some of the people they help at the shelter feel really good about themselves.

Odie hopes that more people like Gauthier with a profession that could help people and have a vision doing just that will hopefully contact the Mission to do something similar.

"We cannot do it all on our own and when people come in with a very specific vision like this, you know it just makes our jobs so much easier, right," Odie said. "Because there's no one on staff here that could really do this like Jay would be able to do."

Gauthier even sent an open invitation to hairdressers and barbers, hoping they would join him at the Mission to help with the cuts.

"What I'm looking forward to on Monday is seeing the smiles on peoples faces, seeing the good haircuts and just getting to know Jay a little bit better and just to see where this relationship goes."
