The spring session of the Saskatchewan legislature kicks off on Tuesday, but like everything else, it will look quite different this year.

The six-week sitting will start on Tuesday with the announcement of the provincial budget.

MLA for Moose Jaw - Wakamow, Greg Lawrence, explains just how different this sitting will look compared to years passed.

"With COVID-19 challenges, only about half of us are going to be in the house at a time. The budget, instead of being released a few days or weeks into the session, it's going to be released on the first day of the session. We'll then be sitting from Monday to Friday, maybe even work at the Legislature on the weekends."

One campaign promise the Saskatchewan Party made last fall leading up to the election stated that they would have a balanced budget in the province by 2024. Lawrence says they're still hoping to do that.

"That was our promise. That's what we're going to shoot for, but as our Finance Minister and Deputy Premier has said, we're not going to put the people of the province at risk by forcing something that can't happen. We're going to do our best to get there though."

Newly-elected MLA for Moose Jaw North, Tim Mcleod, will be taking part in his first spring session. He says while the pandemic did make the budget process a little more difficult than usual, he's confident with what will be presented Tuesday.

"Kudos to the Minister of Finance and her team. The work that they've been doing with the pandemic creating constant adjustments to all of the budget, they've done a great job of working through those challenges and we're confident that the budget we put forward on April 6 is in the best interest of everybody in Saskatchewan."

As for what to expect, McLeod wasn't able to divulge too much information.

"The government has made it clear that we're going to continue to implement our campaign promises, and there will be a reasonable load of new legislation introduced."

Members of the Legislature will also not be allowed to leave Regina during the duration of the sitting and will remain in the Queen City until May 14.
