The Moose Jaw Police Service has made it their personal mission to have a diverse police force and it shows.

According to Sgt. Kevin Pilsworth, the percentage of officers who would be considered "local" has dropped, meaning they've brought in people from a variety of communities, and the number of female officers has also grown in the past ten years.

"We know that there is so much value in people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, to bring some of those unique qualities to our police service in order to make us more of a rounded organization and more effective police agency," explained Sgt.Pilsworth. "Currently, we do have 56 members on our police service, a lot of our officers come from all types of different backgrounds."

He noted that just in the span of a decade their force has seen officers from other cities calling Moose Jaw home, and creating a life here while bringing their unique experience and education.

"25-30% of our people are originally from Moose Jaw, they weren't necessarily born here but they were raised here. More recently though, over the past ten years, that's changed a bit... probably about 15% of our current members would have called Moose Jaw, which shows you quite a change in our hiring over the past ten years."

Sgt.Pilsworth said there could be a number of reasons as the why these statistics over the years have changed, one may be that the police service has done a better job of marketing themselves and our community.

"We've started to do a better job of letting people outside of Moose Jaw know about Moose Jaw as a community, reaching out to locations and places letting them know when we're hiring and I think it generated more interest in our police service."

There is currently a call out to anyone interested in applying at the Moose Jaw Police Service, and Sgt. Pilsworht said anyone interested can find a list of qualifications and criteria on their website. He said anyone who may have further questions or would like to chat with someone about the opportunity is welcome to stop by the Police Station.
