Presents under the tree and a chance to visit with family... the holidays are here but crooks aren't exactly filled with cheer. They're on the look out for easy targets and Moose Jaw Police are giving some tips on how to avoid being a victim.

Constable Kyle Cunningham has some tips that could help you this holiday season;

"If you're gone for an extended period of time be sure to arrange someone else to check up on your residence. Additionally, inside your home you'll want to leave a light on or leave lights on a timer to give the appearance that some one is home. Don't leave presents or valuables in plain sight, and be sure to lock your doors."

Cunningham says scammers are also kicking their efforts into overdrive, trying to take advantage of the holiday spirit. He adds if you're ever suspicious of someone looking for donations, call the local office and make a donation there rather than online or on your doorstep.

"A lot of organizations do use the phone to solicit some funds for their projects. Best is if you reach out to them personally and say 'I'm not comfortable, I'm not too sure who you are, I'd like to contact my local agency".
