City Hall is working on a new bylaw that will prevent homeowners from just making their own driveways.  In recent years, bylaw officers have been getting a good number of complaints over vehicles being parked on front lawns but there really hasn't been a concrete set of rules.

Michelle Sanson with Planning and Development says there will be in the very near future, requiring the site to be developed.

"We'll need you to come in and apply for a driveway crossing permit which is through our engineering department and will have certain requirements on size and width." explained Sanson."

Dirt or grass is not going to be an approved surface even if you've always parked there. The bare minimum will be gravel for the parking surface with the emphasis being placed on the area being improved when compared to the rest of the lawn or front yard.

Moose Jaw isn't the only city dealing with parking issues.  Residents around the University of Regina are trying to get a bylaw changed that will allow tickets to be issued to those who don't follow the rules.

A lack of street parking in the area that sees a lot of tenants in one home, is being blamed for vehicles on the lawn.  Wording of their bylaw also prevents ticketing drivers, instead the land owner is cited for the offence but can appeal, which can take months to deal with.
