Organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Moose Jaw are hoping a change will do them good.

Traditionally held in Wakamow Valley, the annual fundraiser for cancer research will begin in a new location when the event is held Sunday, September 17.

"This year we'll be holding it at the Moose Jaw Tourism Centre," said Joss Gauthier, spokesperson for Moose Jaw's Cobra Cheerleading Club, which is organizing the event for the second consecutive year.

Gauthier feels the change will re-invigorate the fundraiser, which is held in the name of Terry Fox, the B.C. native whose "Marathon of Hope" captivated the country in 1980.

Fox, whose right leg was amputated after being diagnosed with osteocarcoma in 1977, had to abandon his attempt to run across Canada after 143 days when his cancer spread and he became too ill to finish.

Fox passed away on June 28, 1980, but since 1981 the Terry Fox Run has been held in communities across Canada, raising over $650-million for cancer research in that time.

Gauthier says they take Terry's initial goal of raising just one dollar from every Canadian to heart.

"Whatever we can raise would be great," he said. "Terry Fox didn't want us to charge a set amount, just donate what you can."

Registration for the Terry Fox Run in Moose Jaw will be at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, September 17 at the Tourism Moose Jaw Visitor Centre on Thatcher Drive East. The race will begin at 11.
