During the holidays law enforcement across the province and SGI turned their focus to impaired driving.

On Tuesday SGI released the statistics from December's Traffic Safety Spotlight. Unfortunately 352 charges related to impaired driving were laid in that month. Officers also laid 306 criminal code charges and 46 roadside suspensions, which sees an experienced driver behind the wheel having a blood alcohol content level of .04 to .08.

The following was also provided by SGI, highlighting some of the other infractions officers reported:

-375 distracted driving offences (including 282 cellphone tickets);

-287 tickets related to seatbelts and car seats; and

-4,771 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving.

The same efforts have spilled into the new year, as SGI also mentioned that the Traffic Safety Spotlight for January will be focused on the same infraction. They hope that 2019 will be "the year nobody even thinks about driving impaired."

They also want to remind drivers that, as of the middle of last month, law enforcement in Saskatchewan can demand a breath sample if they suspect a driver is impaired and noted that officers are equipped to determine if a driver is drunk or high. Officers will soon have technology and equipment to do further testing not only for those under the influence of alcohol, but also for those under the influence of cannabis.
