The cold we've been experiencing lately is no joke, and that's why officials are making residents aware of what resources are available and who you should contact if you find yourself in an emergency situation.

Fire Chief Rod Montgomery said Mother Natures cold wrath is no stranger to Saskatchewan folks, but we need to be making sure we're being smart in these types of situations as well.

"First thing you want to do is friends or family to reach to them, at the end of the day we're our brother's keeper so if there's friends, family, neighbours that can help you out," explained Chief Montgomery. "Failing that, if you're having issues and you need help you've got to reach out to the appropriate agencies. Moose Jaw is a smaller community and we wouldn't know people are having problems unless they let us know."

He noted that after reaching out to an elder family friend talking about what they used to do when she was younger, they detailed that you called your neighbour pulled out your thickest blankets and made sure everyone in your area was alright.

The Chief noted that all situations are different, and in this case where we're seeing extreme cold for days on end, its about proper maintenance and gathering supplies.

"It's like anything prevention is a bit part of things. Always make sure your furnaces and that has been checked by a qualified technician, make sure everything's running properly. If you're using space heaters that we don't put ourselves in danger by using those things by having them crowded around combustibles or those types of things where now we're at risk of having a fire," said Cheif Montgomery. "Common sense things, keep extra supplies in your vehicles, take blankets, maybe a candle. It's not a bad idea to have extra food on hand and that would be in your house as well, if I have to look at an emergency in summer, winter or fall, I should have a 72 hour supply of dry goods or canned food. A flashlight with batteries in it would be important."

He also added that if you're a pet owner we should be more mindful of our four-legged family members at this time too, don't keep them outside long periods of time and make sure they have all the necessities as well.
