A very cold and tired group of men set out to raise $8,000 for the Moose Jaw Transition House and have already surpassed that goal; by a lot.

16 men slept outside last night to increase awareness of the White Ribbon Campaign, which started in 1991 after the Montreal Massacre that took the lives of 14 women.

Jared Mathieson, board member of the Moose Jaw Transition House explains why they chose 16 men.

"Today also started the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence, which ends on December 10, which is human rights day."

The group has raised over $27,000 so far, with all proceeds going to the Moose Jaw Transition House.

Mathieson says it was a difficult night.

"It was cold, and not much sleep happened. It was uncomfortable," says Mathison.

Last night's low was around -15 degrees, giving the group just an idea of how difficult staying outside is for those who have nowhere else to turn.

He says homelessness is a big issue in our city.

"It would be terrible to sleep outside every night, it's not fun and it's something the city needs to look at."
